The coexistence of what may look like many different and unrelated elements at the foundation of Arequipa’s history invites archaeologists and ethnographers to study those elements. In this rigorous work, the author explores the region’s cultural landscape and the role played by the Apus, the sacred mountains where the hydrographic network of the southern Andes is born. The ancestral relationships that ancient peruvians established between petroglyphs and sacred spaces on the one hand, and the manifestations of nature on the other, resulted in a collection of traditions that are still alive and feed our contemporary reality. The book’s prologue is written by Luis Enrique Tord, a Peruvian historian, anthropologist, poet and writer.
