Parque Nacional Río Abiseo. Memoria viva del paisaje cultural andino amazónico
Jorge Paredes
A multidisciplinary scientific expedition visited the upper valley of the Montecristo River to corroborate the information and compile the photographic material this book presents. The expedition, which was organized and sponsored by the Compañía Minera Poderosa (Poderosa Mining Company), was headed by anthropologist Víctor Macedo and architect-anthropologist Adine Gavazzi, and included archaeologist Pablo Gómez, biologists Johnny Ramos, Rosario Huashuayo and Luís García, topographers Jimi Saravia and Rafael Moreno, biologist/conservationist/photographer Rob Williams, conservationist/photographer Heinz Plenge and photographer Heinz Plenge Pardo.

The team made the first aerial recordings of the rock art and funerary structures in the rocky crops around the “Los Pinchudos” site. At Cerro Central, they studied the territorial planning and cultural landscape of a site that has two hundred circular structures showing interesting Chachapoya iconography.

Besides their scientific studies, they corroborated the good state of conservation of the Park by encountering some of its emblematic species, like the yellow-tailed Choro monkey (Lagothrix flavicauda), the yellow-eyebrowed Tucancillo (Aulacorhynchus huallagae – their photographs of this bird being the first ones taken in the wild), and the Spectacled bear

(Tremarctos ornatus).
Technology and digital innovation are also present in the book, with QR codes for two videos made with LIDAR images, a documentary video of the expedition and a photography gallery (in pdf format) that shows the communitarian work of the Pataz Association.
When taken as a whole, the multidisciplinary analyses of the Park made by the different members of the expedition configure an integrated vision toward the future that adds value to this book. Their final conclusions have generated a useful scientific debate.
The successful conclusion of this multidisciplinary work proves the value of shared goals and the work in collaboration between the public sector, private sector, international organizations, mass communicators and the local population. At the same time, it provides a sustainable model for the research, revaluation and promotion of the national and international World Heritage. The book includes a section with the profiles of the members of the expedition.
