Quipus and Quipucamayocs, encoding and administration in ancient Peru
Lucrezia Milillo, Magdalena Setlak, Sabine Hyland, Viviana Moscovich
It's been 500 years since the first news about this instrument spread in Europe, but we still face the same questions Europeans did at the time: Is it a form of writing? How was it codified? How was it learned or taught? Who uses them? What is their function in society?
The study of the quipus has been an intellectual adventure, also fraught with modern myths about writing and the quipu, its codification. We will get closer to the truth when various specialists combine our diverse perspectives, some of which are reflected here in this book, with the goal of deciphering the quipus. This project will inevitably take many years, but it is not impossible, and the results will undoubtedly be surprising. (Carmen Arellano)
